These 5-ingredient French onion burgers deliver rich umami flavor with minimal prep, making them perfect for weeknight dinners, backyard barbecues, or casual gatherings. Versatile, satisfying, and easy to customize for gluten-free, keto, or vegetarian diets.

Ingredients

Scale

Burger Patties (5 ingredients):

  • 1⅓ lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 oz packet onion soup seasoning mix
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 4 brioche burger buns (toasted)

Optional toppings:

  • Slices of white cheddar or preferred cheese
  • Crispy bacon
  • Caramelized onions
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Dijonnaise (mayonnaise + Dijon mustard + garlic, salt, pepper)

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat (450–500°F).
  2. Prep all desired toppings and condiments.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, and salt. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into 1-inch thick patties. Press a small indent into the center of each patty with your thumb.
  5. Place patties on the grill over direct heat. Grill for 3 minutes per side for medium doneness.
  6. Add cheese during the last minute of grilling, if making cheeseburgers.
  7. Toast brioche buns on the grill during the last minute.
  8. Assemble burgers with toasted buns, Dijonnaise, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, bacon, and desired toppings.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the beef to maintain juiciness.
  • Use gluten-free buns and certified gluten-free onion soup mix for a gluten-free version.
  • Use lettuce wraps or portobello mushrooms for low-carb/keto.
  • Substitute beef with plant-based ground meat for a vegetarian version.
  • Add spices (garlic powder, smoked paprika, thyme) for deeper flavor.
  • Store cooked patties up to 3 days refrigerated or 3 months frozen.
