Description

Dutch apple pie is a classic dessert featuring tender, spiced apples topped with a buttery, crumbly streusel instead of a traditional crust. The pie combines sweet and tart apple flavors with a crunchy topping for the perfect balance of textures. Ideal for fall gatherings, holidays, or everyday baking, this pie is simple to make, endlessly adaptable, and always crowd-pleasing.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust:

  • 1 homemade or store-bought pie crust

Apple Filling:

  • 1 batch of your preferred apple pie filling

Streusel Topping:

  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup packed brown sugar

Optional Add-ins:

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Instructions

  1. Prepare apple pie filling according to your preferred recipe.
  2. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C).
  3. Fit the pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate and flute the edges. Use a frozen crust if desired (no need to thaw).
  4. Pour the prepared apple filling into the crust and spread evenly.
  5. In a bowl, combine cold butter, flour, and brown sugar.
  6. Use a pastry blender or two forks to cut the butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  7. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the apple filling.
  8. Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the crust and topping are deep golden brown.
  9. Cool the pie for at least 20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for a crumbly, crisp streusel texture.
  • Avoid overfilling the pie crust to prevent overflow.
  • Let the pie cool slightly before serving for clean slices.
  • Cover the edges with foil halfway through baking if the topping browns too quickly.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
  • Freeze unbaked pie up to 3 months; bake directly from frozen, adding extra time as needed.
