Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (lean preferred, or substitute with turkey or chicken)
- 1 medium head green cabbage (chopped into bite-sized pieces)
- 1 large onion (finely chopped)
- 2–3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes (fire-roasted for extra flavor)
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella, or your preferred blend)
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven – Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large casserole dish.
- Prepare Ingredients – Chop cabbage, dice onion, and mince garlic.
- Cook the Beef – Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning, then set aside.
- Sauté Onion & Garlic – In the same skillet, sauté onions until translucent. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Simmer Tomato Mixture – Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
- Layer the Dish – In the greased casserole dish, layer cabbage, half of the beef mixture, and repeat, ending with cabbage on top.
- Add Cheese – Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil for the last 10 minutes to brown the cheese.
- Rest & Serve – Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For softer cabbage, blanch it in boiling water before layering.
- To avoid excess grease, drain the fat after browning the beef.
- Shred your own cheese for better melting results.
- Customize it with added veggies, spice, or a different cheese blend.
- Make ahead – Assemble and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
