Description

This Cabbage Beef Bake is a hearty, budget-friendly, and flavor-packed dish that combines tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, tangy tomato sauce, and melted cheese. It’s easy to make, perfect for meal prep, and a comforting one-dish meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean preferred, or substitute with turkey or chicken)
  • 1 medium head green cabbage (chopped into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 23 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes (fire-roasted for extra flavor)
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella, or your preferred blend)
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven – Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large casserole dish.
  2. Prepare Ingredients – Chop cabbage, dice onion, and mince garlic.
  3. Cook the Beef – Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning, then set aside.
  4. Sauté Onion & Garlic – In the same skillet, sauté onions until translucent. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  5. Simmer Tomato Mixture – Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  6. Layer the Dish – In the greased casserole dish, layer cabbage, half of the beef mixture, and repeat, ending with cabbage on top.
  7. Add Cheese – Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  8. Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil for the last 10 minutes to brown the cheese.
  9. Rest & Serve – Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For softer cabbage, blanch it in boiling water before layering.
  • To avoid excess grease, drain the fat after browning the beef.
  • Shred your own cheese for better melting results.
  • Customize it with added veggies, spice, or a different cheese blend.
  • Make ahead – Assemble and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
