Description

Tender sweet potato rounds glazed in a rich, spiced syrup of butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg perfect as a holiday side or comforting year-round dish. Naturally gluten-free and easily adaptable to vegan or lower-sugar diets.

Ingredients

– 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into ½-inch rounds

– ½ cup unsalted butter

– ½ cup packed brown sugar

– ¼ cup pure maple syrup

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

– ¼ teaspoon fine salt

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel sweet potatoes and slice into ½-inch thick rounds; set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Stir in brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes glossy (1–2 minutes).
  5. Add sweet potato rounds and toss to coat evenly.
  6. Spread into a single layer, cover, and cook for about 10 minutes to begin softening.
  7. Uncover, gently flip the slices, and continue cooking uncovered, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are fork-tender and the sauce thickens into a syrupy glaze (10–15 minutes).
  8. Stir in vanilla extract during the last minute of cooking.
  9. Remove from heat and let stand 2–3 minutes to allow the glaze to cling.
  10. Spoon the glossy sauce over the potatoes and serve warm.

Notes

– Cut sweet potatoes into uniform rounds for even cooking.

– If the glaze thickens too quickly before potatoes soften, add 1–2 tablespoons of water.

– For a vegan version: use plant-based butter and ensure maple syrup is used (not honey).

– Optional add-ins: toasted pecans, mini marshmallows, a splash of bourbon, or orange zest.

– Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
