Crab and Shrimp Seafood Bisque

  • Author: Leslie Bennett
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Description

Crab and shrimp seafood bisque is a velvety bisque featuring tender shrimp, succulent crab meat, and a creamy tomato-infused base. Perfect for special occasions, dinner parties, or as a comforting homemade meal. Easily made gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan.

Ingredients

For the Bisque:

– 4 tbsp butter (substitute plant-based butter for vegan diets)

– ⅓ cup chopped celery

– ⅓ cup chopped green onions

– 3 tbsp flour (substitute gluten-free flour if needed)

– 1½ cups heavy whipping cream (substitute almond milk or coconut cream for dairy-free diets)

– 2 cups whole milk (substitute plant-based milk for vegan diets)

– 1 tbsp tomato paste

– 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning (substitute paprika, celery salt, and black pepper for similar results)

– Salt and pepper (to taste)

For the Seafood:

– 8 oz cooked shrimp, cut into pieces

– 8 oz crab meat

For Garnish:

– Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add celery and green onions, sautéing until softened.
  2. Stir in flour and cook for another minute to create a roux.
  3. Heat milk in the microwave until warm, then pour into the saucepan. Whisk continuously to combine and eliminate lumps.
  4. Whisk in heavy whipping cream, tomato paste, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring to a low simmer, stirring occasionally, until the bisque thickens.
  5. Stir in cooked shrimp and crab meat, cooking until heated through.
  6. Ladle into bowls, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve immediately.

Notes

– Use high-quality seafood: This ensures maximum flavor and freshness. Thaw frozen shrimp and crab completely before using and pat dry to avoid excess moisture.

– Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freeze portions for longer storage; reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave. Avoid boiling when reheating to prevent curdling.

– Customizations: Swap shrimp and crab with lobster, scallops, or clams for variety. Add diced tomatoes, roasted garlic, or fresh herbs like thyme or dill for added complexity.
