Dump and Bake Meatball Casserole

  • Author: Leslie Bennett

Description

Meatball casserole is a hearty dish featuring tender meatballs, savory marinara sauce, bowtie pasta, and melted cheese. Perfect for family dinners, potlucks, or as a homemade comfort food. Easily made gluten-free, low-carb, or vegan.

Ingredients

For the Casserole:

– 1 bag frozen meatballs (defrosted, substitute fresh meatballs if preferred)

– 1 jar marinara or spaghetti sauce (substitute homemade sauce if desired)

– 3 cups water

– 1 box bowtie pasta (substitute gluten-free pasta or zucchini noodles for low-carb diets)

– 1 tsp Italian seasoning

For Topping:

– 1½ cups mozzarella cheese (substitute dairy-free cheese for vegan diets)

– ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (omit or substitute nutritional yeast for vegan diets)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and use a high-sided oven-proof pot or skillet.
  2. Add defrosted meatballs, marinara sauce, water, bowtie pasta, and Italian seasoning to the pot or skillet. Stir to combine evenly.
  3. Cover the pot or skillet with a lid or aluminum foil.
  4. Bake for 35 minutes, ensuring the pasta cooks through and absorbs the sauce.
  5. Remove from the oven, top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, and bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  6. Let the casserole sit for 10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and make slicing easier.

Notes

– Use high-quality marinara sauce: This ensures maximum flavor. Substitute plant-based ingredients for vegan diets.

– Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freeze portions for longer storage; reheat gently in the oven or microwave. Avoid microwaving if possible to prevent rubbery cheese.

– Customizations: Swap bowtie pasta with penne, fusilli, or gluten-free alternatives. Add sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or roasted red peppers for variety.
