  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 cups (415g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup warm whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Finishing

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon orange zest mixed with sugar for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar.
    • In a separate bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, egg, and melted butter.
    • Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
    • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Proof the Dough:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Beignets:
    • Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
    • Cut into 2-inch squares (or desired shape).
    • Place shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Fry the Beignets:
    • Heat oil to 360°F in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot.
    • Fry the beignets in small batches for 3-5 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.
    • Drain on paper towels.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • While still warm, dust the beignets generously with powdered sugar.

Serve immediately and enjoy with a café au lait or your favorite drink.

Notes

  • Beignets are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes or in an air fryer at 300°F for 2-3 minutes to maintain crispiness.
  • For a twist, try dipping beignets in chocolate or caramel sauce.
