Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, egg, and melted butter.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Proof the Dough:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Beignets:
- Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Cut into 2-inch squares (or desired shape).
- Place shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them rest for 30 minutes.
- Fry the Beignets:
- Heat oil to 360°F in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot.
- Fry the beignets in small batches for 3-5 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels.
- Finish and Serve:
- While still warm, dust the beignets generously with powdered sugar.
