Description

These French Onion Soup Burgers bring together the savory richness of French onion soup and the heartiness of a juicy beef patty. Topped with caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and served on toasted brioche buns, this gourmet burger is a delightful fusion of flavors that elevates the classic American burger to new heights.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 3 large yellow or white onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp water (plus more as needed)
  • 1 tbsp brandy or Sherry (optional)

For the Beef Patties:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 or 85/15)
  • 2 tbsp French onion soup mix (store-bought or homemade)

For Assembly:

  • 4 brioche buns, toasted
  • 4 oz Gruyère cheese, sliced
  • Optional toppings: Dijon mustard, fresh thyme
  • Optional addition: 4 crispy croutons

Instructions

Prepare the Caramelized Onions:

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter and water over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cover. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly browned.
  2. Uncover and continue cooking, stirring frequently. Add water as needed to prevent burning. Cook until deep golden brown and caramelized (30-40 minutes).
  3. Add brandy or Sherry (optional) in the last few minutes for enhanced flavor. Set aside.

Make the Beef Patties:

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef with French onion soup mix. Form into 4 patties with a slight indentation in the center.
  2. Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for about 3 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. During the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, add a slice of Gruyère cheese to each patty. Cover to melt.

Assemble the Burgers:

  1. Place the cheese-topped patties on the bottom half of each toasted brioche bun.
  2. Add a generous portion of caramelized onions on top of the cheese.
  3. (Optional) Add a crouton under each patty for extra texture.
  4. Spread Dijon mustard on the top bun or sprinkle with fresh thyme if desired. Top with the bun and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use high-quality ground beef for the juiciest patties.
  • Homemade French onion soup mix offers better flavor control.
  • Toasting the buns adds texture and prevents sogginess.
  • Pair with crispy fries, a green salad, or roasted vegetables.
