Description
Honey Buttermilk Bread is a soft, slightly sweet homemade loaf with a tender crumb and rich aroma. The combination of honey and buttermilk creates a beautifully balanced flavor, making it perfect for toast, sandwiches, or even as a base for desserts.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for extra chewiness)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 beaten egg
- (Optional) Spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for added warmth
- (Optional) Oats, nuts, or dried fruits for extra texture
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking soda. In a separate bowl, mix honey, buttermilk, melted butter, and the beaten egg. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry, mixing until a cohesive dough forms.
- Kneading and Rising: Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1–2 hours).
- Baking: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the dough to a greased 8×4 or 9×5-inch loaf pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C).
- Cooling: Remove the bread from the pan and cool it on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a whole-grain version, substitute half of the flour with whole wheat or oat flour and increase the buttermilk or honey slightly for moisture.
- To make a savory herb-infused variation, add fresh rosemary, thyme, or garlic.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, substitute it by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
