Description

Marry Me Tofu is a creamy, flavorful vegan dish made with tofu simmered in a rich, savory sauce featuring soy sauce, coconut milk, and maple syrup. This plant-based comfort food has gone viral for its indulgent taste and romantic name, making it perfect for date nights or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 1 tbsp oil (for cooking tofu)
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce (use tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • ½ cup vegetable broth
  • ½ cup coconut milk or cashew cream
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 1 tsp miso paste or rehydrated dried mushrooms (optional)
  • Optional vegetables:
    • 1 cup broccoli florets
    • Sliced bell peppers
    • Snap peas
  • Garnish options:
    • Chopped green onions
    • Sesame seeds
    • Fresh cilantro

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 15–30 minutes, then cube into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sear tofu with 1 tbsp oil until golden and crispy, or bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  4. Add soy sauce, vegetable broth, coconut milk, and maple syrup. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  5. Return tofu to the pan. Add any optional vegetables and cook until heated through.
  6. Serve over rice, noodles, or quinoa.
  7. Garnish with green onions, sesame seeds, or cilantro.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 2 tbsp water and stir into the sauce while simmering.
  • Customize with sriracha, lime juice, or curry powder.
  • Make it gluten-free by using tamari instead of soy sauce.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.
