  • Author: Leslie Bennett

  • Yield: 8–10 servings

Description

Wisconsin apple kringle is a flaky pastry filled with spiced apples, baked to golden perfection, and drizzled with sweet glaze. Perfect for breakfast, brunches, or as a homemade dessert. Easily made gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

– 3 cups all-purpose flour (substitute gluten-free flour if needed)

– 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast

– ½ cup whole milk, warmed (substitute almond milk for dairy-free diets)

– ½ cup unsalted butter, melted (substitute plant-based butter for vegan diets)

– ¼ cup granulated sugar

– 1 large egg

– ½ tsp salt

For the Filling:

– 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced (substitute pears or peaches for variety)

– ½ cup brown sugar

– 1 tsp ground cinnamon

– 1 tbsp cornstarch

– 2 tbsp unsalted butter (substitute plant-based butter for vegan diets)

For the Glaze:

– 1 cup powdered sugar

– 2 tbsp milk (substitute plant-based milk for vegan diets)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, sugar, egg, and salt, then gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes, then let it rise for 1 hour.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by cooking diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, and butter in a saucepan until thickened.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread the filling evenly, and fold the edges over. Shape into an oval and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  7. Drizzle with glaze and serve warm.

Notes

– Use fresh apples: This ensures maximum flavor and texture. Substitute plant-based ingredients for vegan diets.

– Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days. Freeze portions for longer storage; thaw at room temperature before serving. Avoid microwaving if possible.

– Customizations: Swap apples with pears or peaches for variety. Add chopped nuts, sprinkles, or shredded coconut for added complexity.
