Black Bean Burgers

  • Author: Leslie Bennett
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6 patties

Description

Black bean burgers are a hearty, protein-packed burger made from black beans, spices, and fresh vegetables, perfect for vegans, vegetarians, or anyone looking for a nutritious alternative to traditional beef burgers. Easily paired with buns, lettuce wraps, or salads for added variety.

Ingredients

For the Patties:

– 3 cups cooked black beans (substitute canned black beans; drain and rinse thoroughly)

– 2 large eggs (substitute flax eggs or mashed banana for vegan diets)

– 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (substitute low-sodium alternative or coconut aminos for variety)

– 1 cup feta cheese crumbles (optional; substitute plant-based cheese for vegan diets)

– ½ cup bread crumbs (use gluten-free bread crumbs if needed)

– 1 large diced bell pepper

– ½ cup diced red onion

– 2 tsp cumin

– 1½ tsp chili powder

– 1 tsp garlic powder

– ½ tsp onion powder

– ½ tsp paprika

For Toppings (Optional):

– Avocado slices, sliced onions, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo, or cheese

Instructions

  1. Add cooked black beans to a large mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or food processor to mash most of the beans, leaving some whole for texture.
  2. Add eggs, Worcestershire sauce, feta cheese, bread crumbs, diced bell pepper, diced red onion, and spices. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  3. Shape the black bean mixture into desired-sized patties. Place on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes, or until patties are deep brown/black and reach an internal temperature of 140°F. Alternatively, air fry for 10 minutes or pan fry in a small amount of oil over medium heat for 4–5 minutes per side.
  5. Let patties rest for 5 minutes before serving. Top with your choice of toppings, such as avocado slices, lettuce, tomato, or cheese.

Notes

– Use freshly cooked black beans for maximum flavor and texture. Substitute plant-based ingredients for vegan diets.

– Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–5 days. Freeze patties in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
